Top Free Things To Do In Kuala Lumpur – Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest Eco Park

Even I had lived in KLCC for 2 years, I still haven’t been to Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve (now known as KL Forest Eco Park), a 9.3 hectares forest reserve right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It was originally gazetted as a forest reserve way back in 1906 with a land area of 17.5 hectares, but since then, a large part has already been taken up for building the KL Tower and other purposes. A shame really, as we should have kept a larger green lung like the Central Park in New York.

So last weekend, Big Teddy and I decided to take a stroll at Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, just to find out more about this green lung that seems to be forgotten by the locals. We parked our car next to the Jalan Raja Chulan entrance (RM10 per entry) and walked to Information Center Building where the trails in Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest Eco Park begin. Entrance is free and this is probably one of the best free things to do in Kuala Lumpur. The signages were quite poor and we got a bit lost at the beginning as we were trying to find our way to the main attraction of the park, the Canopy Walk. Anyway, we managed to find our way after asking some kind tourists who were on the way out. Yes, it was a weird moment where a local resident had to ask a foreigner for direction inside the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest Eco Park!

A Walk In The Sky – The Canopy Walk

The 200m aerial bridge or better known as Canopy Walk, is the best vantage point in the park overlooking part the KL skyline, with KL Tower prominently features most of the time. The highest point of the Canopy Walk is at 21 metre. From the Jalan Raja Chulan Entrance, there will be quite a few steps involved to get up to the Canopy Walk. We only saw mostly foreign tourists and some high school expedition in the park. Clearly this park is not that popular with the KL folks, but the canopy walk is getting featured by tourists quite frequently on Instagram nowadays, after being featured as one of the most Instagrammable spots in Kuala Lumpur.

It was a hot day when we visited Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest Eco Park after a brunch date in KL, so we didn’t explore the entire park which features quite a few walking trails ranging between 300 and 500 metres in length. I read that the whole trails would take up to 45 minutes but we only completed the Canopy Walk to KL Tower. Even though Bukit Nanas has shrunk over the years, it still has some trees that appear to be several hundred years old in the forest itself. I also read that the park has about 223 tree species and 12 species of animals, including bats, civet cats, squirrels, monkeys and rats, although I didn’t see any during our short stroll there.

The Canopy Walk ultimately led us to the entrance of KL Tower, the tallest tower in South East Asia. I loved the look of this tower against a clear blue sky with big white clouds! Still, I haven’t been up to the KL Tower yet… Probably one day soon!

Since I just recently bought a video editing software, I also edited a Youtube video to showcase some of our best moments in Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest. So tell me what do you think of this short video.

If you are visiting Kuala Lumpur soon, do check out Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve / KL Forest as one of the best free things to do in KL. A lot of locals don’t even know that such place exists! I hope they will continue to preserve and maintain the park as it’s getting hard to find a nice green space in urban cities and metropolis.

    1. Kuala Lumpur is summer all year long with constant temperature so anytime is a good time. Just try to avoid the noon hot soon and you’ll be just fine.

  1. The canopy walk looks really neat and a great way to reach the KL Tower too. I think every town has that spot where tourists go and locals just seem to avoid. I don’t know if it’s just that the locals have all already been once or it shows up in foreign press more. Still, it’s a funny phenomenon.

  2. That canopy walk looks fantastic! The only thing I’ve experienced that even comes close is at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. Usually I’m afraid of heights, but somehow am not when I’m in the trees. This looks like a must-see in KL!

  3. Wow! The KL Forest Eco Park definitely looks like a beautiful green area in the heart of the city. Really interesting to learn that mostly tourists visit it (I definitely would pay it a visit)!

  4. It’s funny how we rarely play tourist in our own cities, eh? The canopy walk looks like a fantastic way to get away from the city!

  6. It is so nice to have a green park right in the middle of the city. The best part of it is it’s free! Plus the views along the trail are gorgeous. Good find!
