Hidden Speakeasy Whisky Bar – 61 Monarchy

61 Monarchy, a speakeasy whisky bar hidden upstairs of Nara Kitchen & Co in Damansara Uptown, which we stumbled across accidently after our fish & chips dinner at Cor Blimey! I saw the Japanese whisky highball promotion poster at their unmarked entrance, so we decided to check it out.

What we found upstairs was a pleasant surprise, a well stocked whisky bar full of whisky bottles from all around the world. I was impressed with the amount of Japanese whisky selections that they have on their menu. It will take some time to go through all their whisky list, but their whisky based cocktails are just 5 if you fancy a cocktail. 61 Monarchy was cozy as well, with the long bar counter and comfrtable wooden furnitures

The Whisky Sour!

Since we just had a full dinner, I only had room for something lighter instead of a straight up whisky, so I ordered a Whisky Sour (RM40+), a cocktail that contains whisky, lemon juice, sugar, and optionally, a dash of egg white. It was a big glass and I loved it! A good mix of alcohol, sweet and sour tastes made it a great cocktail. Big Teddy started with a beer then joined me with another glass of Whisky Sour. We were the only 2 patrons there and we had fun fiddling the mixers and cocktail ingredients in front of us at the bar counter.

Once we called for the bill, 61 Monarchy served us hot green tea just to cleanse our palate. It was quite a nice touch as I’d not came across this in a long while, which only available in those great little Japanese bars that I’d visited in the past.

In recent years, I’d developed a taste for Japanese whisky, especially Yamazaki and Hibiki after visiting the Yamazaki distillery in Osaka. 61 Monarchy definitely is the best place for whisky lovers in in Kuala Lumpur – well, in Petaling Jaya to be precise (still part of the Greater KL).

  1. When we were visiting Jack Daniels in Tennessee they spoke highly of Japanese Whisky. We were skeptical at first, but the more they described it, the better it sounded. Now, I am itching for a taste. Sipping Japanese Whisky drinks in a hidden speak easy sounds that much better. What a really cool experience.

  2. This speakeasy looks so relaxing; like a nice place to unwind with friends. I don’t often drink whisky, but a whisky sour sounds nice. And green tea afterward is a nice touch!

  3. I love a speakeasy – the atmosphere is so fun for a special night out. This place looks cozy and cute. Also I love whisky sours! They are one of my favorite cocktails so glad to here they make a good one here.

  4. This is heaven for whisky lovers! And a gem for couples to grab late night drinks. I went to a tradeshow once and fell in love with Japanese whisky. I’d love to see the selection they have on the menu.

  5. I don’t drink whisky but I’d love to try Japanese whisky! Love all these Japanese so I’m sure I’ll fall in love with this bar 🙂 I like how they give you green tea to rinse your palette!

  6. I do love whiskey but I’m not a connoisseur by any means. I usually stick to Jameson and despite being from Tennessee, I don’t particularly love Jack Daniels haha

  7. YES!!! Love your post! Especially since I am now officially a Japanese whisky fan. I also definitely have the rhubarb bitters in your photo at my home 🙂 Will add 61 Monarchy to my list of bars to visit in Kuala Lumpur. (And great choice with the whisky sour!)
