How I Got A Free Stay At A London 5 Star Hotel on New Year’s Holiday – The Park Tower Knightsbridge Hotel

On last New Year’s Eve, I decided to splurge and use up my long accumulated SPG points for 2 nights stay at The Park Tower Knightsbridge Hotel over the New Year holiday recently. Starwood’s SPG loyalty program is my favourite hotel loyalty program so far and I’m glad that I used it for the busiest time of the year. Being a Gold member of SPG, there’s no blackout date imposed and I managed to book a room for 2 nights for free using my SPG points (20,000 each night). Hence, the pro tip here is to use your SPG points for the busiest time of the year as the points required for free night stay are the same throughout the year, you just have to book early! With the points and free upgrades, we saved over £800 for the 2 nights stay.

After a long transit into London on the Tube on New Year’s Eve, we got off at Knightsbridge Station and the hotel is located just next to the Tube station which is extremely handy. Upon check-in, the front desk manager was kind enough to upgrade our room for free to high floors with a partial view of the London fireworks and gave us 2 complimentary cocktails vouchers to drink at the bar. How nice of them~!

The Park Tower Knightsbridge is a unique hotel with a round structured building giving all the rooms a panoramic view of London city (except for the lower floors which you’ll only see nearby buildings). We got a lovely view overlooking Harrods with a stunning sunset. The hotel even sent me printed copy of the sunset shot that I posted on my Instagram after I checked out from the hotel. What a lovely gesture!

Our room was spacious and extremely functional, with a fully loaded minibar, large wardrobe with ironing facility, huge walk-in bathroom with separate bathtub and shower. Most importantly, the bed was large and so comfortable to sleep in, we really had hard times getting out of bed in the morning! I also love the large windows in the room and always found myself by the window admiring the city views.

We went to down to the Hyde Bar for a quick drink before our New Year’s Eve dinner at their award winning One-O-One Restaurant (full review here). The Hyde Bar was dark and dim, good for some intimate conversations (so long the people around are not ear dropping because it was full when we were there). We had a glass of whisky and G&T each on the house before we adjourned to the restaurant for a fantastic meal to close off 2016. After the dinner, we were too lazy to wander off to the Big Ben’s area (walkable but cold), so we retired early to the room, switched on the big flat screen and watched the London New Year countdown from our room. When the fireworks started blasting from Big Ben, we could see a corner of the actions and some other fireworks all across the city. It was such a beautiful night to end 2016! I’m already plotting on next trip we should get the room facing Big Ben in order to get the best view of the London New Year’s fireworks. So the secret is out… If you want to watch the London New Year’s fireworks but don’t like the crowd, get yourself a room at The Park Tower Knightsbridge, expensive but will be well worth it.

Overall it was a 2-nights great stay at a fabulous location of downtown London. The Park Tower Knightsbridge Hotel’s location across Hyde Park and next to Harrods makes it so convenient to get to all the actions in London. We even had a wonderful time at the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park with some wild rides and german beers. The hotel’s service was good and attentive even though it was the busiest time of the year. Also, this hotel is extremely popular among the Middle Eastern guests evidenced by the 2 big Middle Eastern restaurants right next to the hotel. We were literally the 2 non-Middle Eastern guests throughout our stay and felt that we weren’t in London at all. Then again, London is such a multicultural city hence so many people from different parts of the world would love to visit this amazing city.

  1. What a smart idea! I’d love to spend New Year’s Eve doing something festive without having to fight through crowds. Getting a beautiful hotel room like this one with stunning views is such a great idea. And how nice that they sent you a printout of your sunset photo. The extra touches set this place apart.

  2. So impressive that you got this stay for free. Amazing job! I had SPG points, but I ended up transferring them to an airline partner instead of using them on a hotel. Will have to try this next time though!

  3. Is it too much of a cop out to claim Marriott brands as part of SPG now? I have stayed at some pretty fantastic Marriott properties throughout the years. That looks like a beautiful way to watch New Years fireworks.

  4. This is perfect! I’m a firm believer in treating yourself, and no better way to spend your points than on a special occasion! Also, if there’s a bathrobe, it’s automatically a win haha 😉

  5. I am a huge fangirl of SPG!!! I’ve stayed in some amazing properties with my accummulates points including 12 days in Moorea, 17 days in Italy, a week in Paris (3 times!) and this year a week in Kauai. This is the best program ever!

  6. I just recently signed up for SPG loyalty program! I couldn’t believe that you got free rooms for NYE!! It is a smart idea to save the points and use them during the busiest period. How far in advance did you book your room?

  7. I love the panoramic views from each room and the sofa by the window too! Also, amazing that you got the NYE room for free too! Nice to stay in the comfort of your room and see the fireworks too! 🙂

  8. OMG this hotel looks phenomenal! I’m so jealous. You’ve also reminded me that I have an SPG card and haven’t been using it!! What is wrong with me.. Thanks for the reminder and the great hotel review. I must check this place out! Wow!

  9. Woo hoo, welcome drinks! Sounds awesome! The hotel looks gorgeous. I’ve used points to get flights for free, but haven’t really gotten into booking hotels on points yet. Props to you for doing it during one of the busiest times of the year! 🙂

  10. Oh wow the view from the room is amazing! Love how the building is shaped with the rounded windows. I really need to get on hotel points so I can score free nights even during peak season
