Food For Thought 190 – Acme Bar & Coffee

Where to Eat Around KLCC – Acme Bar & Coffee

This fairly new cafe cum restaurant, Acme Bar & Coffee (opened December 2011) located in the high end street of Jalan Binjai is one of the much talk about restaurants in KL’s bustling F&B scene. With its playfully chic interior design and high ceiling filled with lots of natural sunlight, one can’t help but to feel chill out at this restaurant. We went there over a Friday for lunch as the girls craved for nice dessert after we heard rave reviews about their Cempedak Cake. So we took a quick drive to Acme Bar & Coffee and found ourselves seated in the still emptied restaurant. The menu looked extremely familiar like Plan B’s menu, although their selection are not as wide and price is much higher. They do have different set lunch menu from RM49+ every week but we opted for the ala carte Pasta instead. The smoked duck breast pasta with carbonara base (RM35+) that I ordered was unfortunately average. The same comment also gathered from my friends for their Green Chili Pesto Fettuccine (RM35+) and Seafood and Basil Pasta (RM39+). So I was worried about the dessert being over hyped and under tasted.

We ordered the famous Cempedak Cake (RM15+) to sample and it came with a big slice of sponge cake layered with cempedak cream in between and pistachio nuts on the outer layer. The first bite tasted a bit odd as I’m not really cempedak lover, but the following bites make this dessert quite an addictive cake to keep digging it. We finished the Cempedak Cake with rooms for another dessert hence we ordered the recommended Pavlova (RM15+). This is by far one of the best dessert I’d tasted in a long while, the crisp crust with passion fruit filling topped with whipped cream and strawberries made it the best finale to our lunch. Overall, pasta dishes were underwhelmed and overpriced, desserts were the highlight and definitely worth trying.

By the way, Acme means “the best” in Greek. Not that I’d say Acme Bar & Coffee is the best cafe and restaurant in town but it is a welcomed addition to KL eatery scene, with their lovely dessert. Perhaps I will give them another try next time to find out if their main courses are any good than the disappointing pastas we had the other day.
